About this event
At Annantalo Arts Centre in Helsinki on Saturday, 14 November 2026: Annantalo Art Saturday: Šiella. There's no charge to get in.
‘Šiella’ is a North Sámi word that means ‘talisman’ or ‘amulet’. We make our own šiella from reindeer antler and wooden beads to protect us and to remind us of the importance of nature.
Reindeer are an important part of Sámi culture and the Sámi way of life. Through reindeer, we have learnt to observe nature and its changes. Every reindeer antler is unique and different. If you look closely at a herd of reindeer, you will see that no two reindeer are alike.
We humans are all different too, but we still belong to the same colourful herd. Everyone has their own language, culture and customs.

I bring you greetings from the north and from my reindeer, who are donating their antlers to the workshop participants. In this workshop, participants get to make their own šiella from reindeer antler and wooden beads to serve as a protective talisman and to remind us of the importance of nature and people’s sense of community that resembles that of a reindeer herd.
