Le contrepoint contemporain met à l’honneur Vija Celmins, l’artiste qui développe depuis la fin des années 1960 un travail très précis, centré sur les surfaces : océan, désert, ciel ou neige, qu’elle appelle « images impossibles », sans repères spatiaux, immergeant le spectateur dans l’infini.
Ses œuvres, réalisées entre 1971 et 2000, utilisent différentes techniques (dessin, peinture, estampe, bois gravé) et jouent sur la planéité et l’illusion.
Présentées dans le pronaos et la salle contemporaine du musée, ces pièces dialoguent avec les Nymphéas de Monet et invitent à une expérience attentive et silencieuse.
