La princesa Odette fue convertida en cisne por un hechizo del malvado Von Rothbart que le permite recuperar su forma humana únicamente por la noche y del que sólo el amor verdadero podrá salvarla. El príncipe Sigfrido la conoce, se enamora de ella y le jura amor eterno pero Von Rothbart, ayudado por su hija Odile, lo engañan para que traicione su juramento.
