Tue, 24 Nov – Mon, 7 Dec 2026 at Cultural Centre Stoa, Helsinki
About this event
Catch the exhibition Hautakaupungin ääniä – Sounds of a Necropolis at Cultural Centre Stoa, Helsinki between Tuesday, 24 November 2026 and Monday, 7 December 2026. Entry is free.
The exhibition 'Hautakaupungin ääniä' consists of soundscapes that invite visitors to reflect on death and burial.
The soundscapes have been developed in collaboration with five belief communities as part of the University of Helsinki’s MeDea (Meaningful Deathspaces) research project.
Cemeteries are part of the changing urban landscape. Carrying history and creating places for remembrance of the departed, cemeteries tell us whose customs and needs are recognised within society.

In this exhibition, the voices of belief minorities provide opportunities for participation and knowing: they challenge us to thing about different ways to approach and understand death.
What sort of sounds can be heard in the city?
The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Ars Moriendi Festival and the MeDea research project.
