L'Histoire du soldat raconte l'histoire d'un soldat qui échange son violon avec le diable contre un livre capable de prédire l'avenir. Devenu riche, il ne trouve pourtant pas le bonheur. Après avoir récupéré son violon et épousé une princesse, il désobéit au diable en quittant son royaume. Le diable finit par l'emporter, et l'œuvre se conclut par le triomphe du démon.
