L'histoire se déroule à Ceylan et raconte l'amitié de deux pêcheurs, Nadir et Zurga, mise à l'épreuve lorsqu'ils tombent tous deux amoureux de la prêtresse Leïla. Entre amour, jalousie et sacrifice, Zurga choisira finalement de laisser s'enfuir les deux amoureux.
