« La vérité est rarement simple et pure. si C’était le cas, La vie moderne serait bien fastidieuse. » Deux amis dandys et noceurs invétérés, Algernon Moncrieff, jeune homme oisif peu enclin à faire face à ses responsabilités, et Jack Worthing, qui se fait connaître aussi sous le nom de Constant, s’inventent respectivement un ami imaginaire maladif et un frère dépravé pour échapper à leurs obligations familiales et financières. Un simple objet viendra lever le voile sur la supercherie de l’un et, dans son sillage, mettra fin à celle de l’autre. A cause de l’Amour ?
