This autumn, the big screen of Metsäpurosali Hall is filled with a diverse selection of Finnish documentary films that offer new perspectives on people and the world around us. Best of all, we have managed to get the film directors to attend the screenings in person!
Inka Achté, the director and screenwriter of the documentary Kaunarikuume, has a conversation with film history expert PhD Harri Kilpi following the screening. After the discussion, the audience can ask questions.

In 1990s’ Finland, people used to watch The Bold and the Beautiful and the news side by side on the telly. One offered an escape from reality, the other a depressing picture of a society in the throes of an economic recession. When the clock struck 17.00 on a weekday afternoon, more than a million Finns would tune in to follow the relationship drama of the American fashion house. While people were queuing for bread and gathering to demonstrate, an unprecedented number of viewers gathered to watch the American wonders, Ridge and Eric, who had been flown into our country.
In Soap Fever, director Inka Achté delves into this captivating fan phenomenon. As she familiarises herself with the series’ fans, she is forced to confront her own painful past during the recession, but she also learns what the superpower of Finnish people is.
