La filmographie d’Esther Hoffenberg est tissée par des portraits de femmes. Un siècle d’amour et de honte retrace l’histoire de sa famille maternelle, les Lamprecht, liée au destin de la Silésie, zone frontalière qui n’a cessé, tout au long du xxe siècle, d’être disputée entre l’Allemagne, la Pologne et la Russie. Parmi ces personnages hauts en couleur, la réalisatrice rend hommage à trois générations de femmes – sa mère Eva, sa grand-mère Gisela et son arrière- grand-mère Gizella-Idona – qui ont lutté pour leur liberté malgré les secrets sur leurs origines, la honte, la maladie mentale, le dénigrement des femmes artistes et la peur de la transgression.
